Argumentative Essay: Pro Death Penalty
Death Penalty is a capital punishment. It is used today and was used during ancient times to punish people with a variety of offenses. The bible also advocate death for murder and other crimes such as kidnapping and stealing. Here in the Philippines, we used to have Death Penalty, but I believe this capital punishment should be issued in all states for those people who commit great crimes. Death Penalty should be issued because death is being feared, it gives Justice, it is a fact that there's no proof of an innocent being executed and there are some quotations from the bible that seem to respond this.
Most people have a natural fear of death and I, myself, am afraid of it. Just think about it; if you die, you'll leave this world and never com back. If we have Death Penalty and a murderer dies instantly, the homicide rate would decrease because no one likes to die. Death Penalty is important because it could save the lives of thousands of potential victims who are at stake.
Another one is that Death Penalty shows justice. There will be justice when we punish the guilty. It show equality. On t.v., I have seen people being interviewed because one or some of their relatives died. They are crying for help and wanting justice for the death of their loved ones. I know for sure that justice can only be the solution for them to be relieved. A serious crime must have serious penalty and that is death. Justice can dignify a person.
People who oppose death penalty claim that in the implementation of this capital punishment, innocent men are wrongly executed. According to "ProDeathPenalty" , there has never been any proof of it. Moreover, our criminal justice system takes extra precautions to be sure the innocent are protected. What's the use of the judges who were trained in this field? They also want to make sure who is guilty and not.
Death Penalty is like "an eye for an eye". Death Penalty helps curtail future murderers and because of this we can save more lives. If Death Penalty exists, repeat murderers are eliminated and future murders are deterred. Just imagine it; we will live in a just society. If death Penalty wouldn't be issued now, then when? When there are more criminals lurking? It is said that every minute, there is a chance that an innocent man could get murdered. We must put a stop to it.

Reflection:
This is also an educational essay. At first, I really don't have an idea whether death penalty is legal or not here in the Philippines. I've asked different people and they answered me differently. Some would say yes and others no. But I stick on the idea that we used to have this capital punishment. I'm pro death penalty because it will scare away murderers. And I really wonder why the Philippines let go of this punishment. I hope this essay would tell people why we need death penalty back.

Reflective Essay 2: My experiences and Improvement in Reading and Writing English
At first, I did have a hard time making essays. I didn't know how to start it. Sometimes, I didn't have any idea about it. But the process of how we made essays during ENGLCOM class was quite easy. We had outlines, drafts, guidelines and references. Peer editing and corrections by Ms. Kathy and my block mates have been of big help in my English. Though there are still times that I commit mistakes.
I become picky in choosing a topic because I want a topic that suits the reader and myself. My reading during peer editing improved because I am able to know if there are some corrections. Every time Ms. Kathy checks my essays, I always want to make a better one in the next essay because I aim for higher grades, especially the major ones. The comparison and contrast essay captures my interest because my topic is one of my favorite movies. With ENGLCOM, I was able to share it with others.
While writing essays, some of my other topics gave me additional information like Death Penalty, Air Pollution and Research Paper. And lastly, the variety of essays we made enhanced my knowledge about that topic. Not only that, I also improved in terms of my spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

This essay shows my reflection about all the essays we have done. It shows my experiences before and after I write the essays. It also shows my improvement. I wrote about the different essays we make and the impact on me.

Cause and Effect Essay : Water Pollution
Hydrogen, most commonly known as water, is one of the important elements in this world. We use it in our daily lives. No one can survive without water. Not only do people need water but also plants and animals. Every year, 14 billion pounds of sewage, sludge and garbage are dumped into the world's oceans. 19 trillion gallons of waste also enter the water annually. Knowing this, different effects have resulted from water pollution such as Marine Debris, nutrient pollution, mining and waterborne infectious diseases.
The first one is Marine Debris. It is basically trash in the ocean. This include escaped inland trash and garbage thrown overboard by ships like plastic bottles, cigarette, butts, Styrofoams and the like. Because of this, marine animals can swallow trash items, which often look similar to prey, that they would normally eat. For instance, sea turtles will eat plastic bag believing it to be a jelly fish. The bag can cause an intestinal blockage and sometimes death.
Another effect is nutrient pollution. This is the most widespread, chronic environmental problem in the coastal ocean. Nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and others that came from agriculture, waste disposal, coastal development and fossil fuel stimulate harmful algae once they reach the coastal zone, having toxic effects and resulting on low-oxygen conditions.
Mining is also an effect of water pollution. A number of negative effects from mining operations occur like acid mine drainage. This happens when a surface of water flows over exposed rock and soil. It can combine to form sulfuric acid, then finds its way to streams, polluting them and destroying local aquatic life. Other examples are spills and leaks. Whether in a containment system of cyanide leach heap or in a coal-slurry impoundment dam, the result is the same - pollution of streams, rivers and ground water, killing aquatic life and poisoning drinking water.
The last effect is waterborne infectious diseases. This occurs when parasites or other disease-causing microorganisms are transmitted via contaminated water. These include typhoid, intestinal parasites and diarrhea disease caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses.
These are just some of the effects of water pollution and many could still come in the future if we don't take care of our water. We should be sensitive about the things around us and we should discipline ourselves. Instead of relying on the people in the government, we can help in our own little ways. As the world undergoes industrialization, the problem of water pollution has intensified. It is hard to know now what our oceans will look like in the future.

Comparison and Contrast Essay : DEATH NOTE
What if you hate someone so much? What if you find a book and when you write a person's name, that person will die? Would you give it a try? Based on a Japanese manga series, Death Note was made into a live action movie. Due to the title itself, it became a hit not only in Japan but also in other countries. It's about a notebook in which when you write a person's name, he'll die after 3 seconds. Not only that, but you can also write how you want the person to die. Two movies were made even though there were already manga and anime versions.
The first film is Death Note. The settings in in Japan. The story is about a college student, who discovers a notebook with the title "Death Note" on the cover. Inside, there are details on how to use the notebook. Yagami Light, the name of the student, wanted to make a better world by killing the people who were released by law even though they were guilty. He was nicknamed "Kira". L, a mysterious but brilliant detective, put his life on the line to capture kira. The arrival of L to search for kira is seen as the climax. The conflict is seen when the investigators and police didn't know who kira was and they were trying to find him. The one who played kira was Tatsuya Fujiwara. It was seen clearly in the movie that he is the antagonist while L, played by Ken'ichi Matsuyama, was indeed the protagonist.
The sequel is Death Note: The Last Name. Basically, from the title, it tells whose name will be written last. The sequel is filmed at the same setting as the first movie. It's the continuation of the first one. L is suspicious about Yagami Light. On the other hand, Yagami Light met a girl named Misa Amane who had Death Note eyes - able to see the lifespan of a person and the Death Note. This is the start of the conflict because there are 2 kira's. The climax was when L wrote his own name in the Death Note. Ken'ichi and Tatsuya still play the same roles but there were new characters added such as Misa Amane played by Erika Toda. In this sequel, Misa also became an antagonist.
Both movies had a big impact especially to the teens. It also made a great influence on them. Due to the success of the films, different Death Note merchandise were also made available to the market such as a Death Note notebook, stuffed toys of characters, i.d laces, bags and much more. Just knowing the title "Death Note" will capture the curiosity of many and as the movie goes on, the interest will never fade until the end of the story.

Reflection:
This essay is the one I enjoyed writing. It captures my interest. The topic/movie is one of my favourite. I didn't have a hard time doing this essay because it seems that I know what I'll write. Because of this essay too, I was able to share my interest and knowledge about this topic. I've seen the topic of of some of my block mates and most of them are from Hollywood. So, I think its really good having this topic.

Definition Essay : Love, Loved
"Late at night when all the world is sleeping, I stay up and think of you, and I still can't believe that you came up to me and say I love you, I love you too"
These are lyrics from Selena's song "Dreaming of you". It is meant for her husband. Because of love, you can create wonderful music that would last for a lifetime. For me, I defined love a long time ago as a bomb that could explode any second. But after I stopped and thought of it, I have proven myself wrong. Love is like a book. You should learn and understand it. Then as you go along the way, you'll learn different lessons in life.
I really think there are no different kinds of love between family. friends and your special someone, because loving is caring. You shouldn't be afraid to show what you really feel. If someone that you love got hurt, you'll be there for them to comfort. You must let them feel that you are always there. There are a lot of famous love quotations from well-known people. Albert Einstein once said, "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love". Knowing this, even scientist can define love. Mother Theresa said that "the hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread". And lastly, from William Shakespeare's, Mid-Summer Night's Dream, "love looks not with the eyes but with the mind and therefore, is winged cupid painted blind". These quotations proved that love is a big influence to people. They are saying that love cannot be explained scientifically, that every person is in search for love and when loving someone, what you think is more important that what you see. Even by just thinking of the person you love, you are able to create lines that will touch other people's heart. There are also songs that talk about love, may it be in a genre of rock or alternative. Also, during the Romantic Period, classical music had been used as a means to love. Famous composers emerged like Chopin, Beethoven and Pachelbel who used music as a way to express their feelings and desire for love.
Love is the greatest thing of all. It is the reason why God created us. Love for music is the main reason for creating beautiful songs nowadays. Love for our country is the reason behind Jose Rizal's death. These are just a few things about love. In my opinion, a person will know if he/she loves someone by realizing that he/she is thinking about the person every time. Tears will run down if he/she hurts you. When you love someone, you'll do everything to be with him/her, while when you like someone you'll go with that person if he/she invites you.

Reflection:
Honestly, I can say this essay is really long and I think some of the entries doesn't count in the topic and not in the right place. It's like I jump in one definition to another. Especially in the conclusion part were I just inserted my opinion in knowing if he/she is in love.
In this essay, not only definitions of others but I have also the chance to tell my own definition about love based on my own experiences.

Reflection:
The first thing we do before we make this essay is that we bought a specific food in our ENGLCOM class; and that was really cool. Eventually, this specific food became our topic. I really have fun writing this essay because first I love chocolate and second, we are able to eat it while writing (at first). Because of it, we got inspired in the essay and focused on the food.
